MTRAC1.  Title – Soils Sampling and Testing

 Source/Developer – M-TRAC

Objective – This course is intended to instruct individuals the proper procedures for sampling and testing soils according to AASHTO and/or ASTM methods.  This material was designed to include instruction, demonstration, and hands-on practice.

Description/Synopsis – The manual describes the test procedures in simplified language for ASTM tests D2488, D2487, D3665, and AASHTO tests T87, T88, T89, T90, T99, T100, T191, T238. T239, T248, T265, T272.

MTRAC3. Title – Hot Mix Asphalt (HMA) Sampling and Testing

 Objective – This course is intended to instruct individuals the proper procedures for sampling and testing Hot Mix Asphalt according to AASHTO methods. This material was designed to include instruction, demonstration, and hands-on practice.

Objective – This course is intended to instruct individuals the proper procedures for sampling and testing aggregates according to Iowa specifications.  This material was designed to include instruction, demonstration, and hands-on practice. This course was intended to include a written and proficiency test for certification.

Description/Synopsis – This material covers sampling (Level I) and testing (Level II) of aggregates in the areas of sieve analysis, moisture, and specific gravity, and deleterious materials.  It also covers the four HMA consensus tests.  There is ledge control discussion included.

1A2.  Title – Level I Portland Cement Concrete (PCC) Reference Manual

Objective – This manual contains all specifications used in the area of Portland Cement Concrete.  It contains all test methods used to instruct Level I PCC.  This material was designed to include instruction, demonstration, and hands-on practice. This course was intended to include a written and proficiency test for certification.

Description/Synopsis – This material covers sampling and testing of Portland cement concrete in the areas of slump, air, temperature, making and curing concrete beams and cylinders, breaking concrete beams, maturity testing. density, and yield.

Objective – This course is intended to instruct technicians how to perform duties as a PCC plant inspector.  This course is intended to include a written test for certification. 

Description/Synopsis – This material covers inspection of PCC paving and structural plants.  This includes checking scales, stockpiles, figuring batch weights and moisture corrections and completing reports.  This course requires Level II Aggregate and Level I PCC as prerequisites.

Objective – This course is intended for the instruction of technicians to perform HMA Superpave mix designs.  This material was designed to include instruction, demonstration, and hands-on practice. This course was intended to include a written test for certification. 

Description/Synopsis – This material covers information on developing HMA mix designs and instruction on tests necessary to perform HMA mix designs.  The emphasis of the manual is on Superpave mix designs with mention of Marshall mix designs.  This course requires Level I HMA as a prerequisite.

Objective – This course is designed to instruct technicians how to operate a profilograph, reduce a trace, and the specifications used for profilograph operation.  This course was developed to include a written test for certification.

Description/Synopsis – This material covers the use of a profilograph and different types of profilographs that may be encountered.  It covers reading and reducing traces and the reporting required.  State specific specifications on when and where the profilograph needs to be run are covered.

Description/Synopsis – This course is an introduction to field inspection of bridge and culvert construction.  This course contains information on bridge and culvert components, their function, and design intent.  It will include a focus on bridge and culvert foundations, reinforcing steel installation, concrete placement, and important dimensional checks necessary to ensure quality of construction.  The roles of inspector and contractor associated with the construction process and potential construction problem areas are also included.
